What You Need To Know About Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals outnumber the number of antioxidants you have in your body.

Free radicals come from the normal metabolic processes of our cells. For example, we use oxygen, in combination with food, to form energy that our cells can utilize. The chemical processes that achieve the formation of energy produce free radicals.

When we breathe, we gather oxygen in the lungs and this is dispersed to all the cells of the body by way of circulation (blood flow). The oxygen gives cells the fuel they need to function. When the cells use this oxygen to form energy, free radicals are formed.

Free radicals are a normal part of life. And they can even be beneficial, but only in small amounts.

Larger amounts of free radicals are damaging and result in something called “oxidative stress.”

4 Common Ways Oxidative Stress Affects Your Body

Fatigue

Fatigue

Overproduction of inflammation can hurt your gut, contributing to diseases like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This inflammation can be caused by genetics, diet, pharmaceuticals, and oxidative inflammation.

Brain Fog

Brain Fog

As the mitochondria in your brain become damaged from free radicals, your brain may have difficulty processing and focusing like it used to. If you feel “foggy,” it’s probably oxidative stress.
Muscle & Joint Pain

An excess of free radicals can also trigger systematic inflammation throughout your body. The most common areas you’ll feel soreness are in your muscles and joints.
Headaches & Decreased Eye Sight

Headaches

Common migraine triggers, including stress, restlessness, air pollution, and more, can increase oxidative stress in the brain.

What Are Your Next Steps For Relieving Oxidative Stress?

AT WELL THEORY, OUR GOAL IS TO HELP YOU CURATE A LIFE LIVED WELL – IN A LASTING, HOLISTIC WAY.

1. Get Adequate Rest Every Day

Your body does most of the work of repairing itself and detoxing free radicals while you rest, so do everything you can to ensure you’re getting a full 8 hours every day.

Improve Your Sleep Habits

2. Relieve Stress

Mental stress forces the body to release and produce molecules that create inflammation and oxidative stress.

3. Change Your Diet

We all know that excess sugars, fats, and simple carbohydrates aren’t good for us. But instead of focusing on what you can remove from your diet, think about what you can add to make it more healthy – like antioxidant fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and more. The Mediterranean Diet is a great place to start!

4. Avoid Pollutants

Exercise is great for reducing inflammation – but recovery is just as important. Make sure to get plenty of rest, and eat a well-rounded diet that gives your body the nutrients it needs to fully repair itself after activity.

UPDATE YOUR LIFESTYLE & WELLNESS ROUTINES.

IT’S EASY TO GET STUCK IN OLD WAYS OF LIVING. IT’S TIME TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE NEW WAYS OF HEALING.

Out With The Old

Oxidative stress can contribute to restlessness, persistent pain, headaches, and more. Instead of medicating your symptoms, address the issues behind your discomfort.

NSAIDs, quick fixes, and heavy pharmaceuticals don’t usually address what’s at the core of your health concerns – and also can be expensive and come with worrying side effects.

Don’t create more issues than you solve – address the cause of your health issues and your symptoms will follow.

Well Theory: Founded To Support Your Health Goals

Dr. Warner founded Well Theory according to her beliefs about functional medicine, or functional wellness, verses conventional medicine.

Take Charge Of Your Health With Well Theory
Conventional medicine often overlooks holistic, long-term lifestyle changes in favor of prescribing heavy pharmaceuticals, recommending harsh and invasive treatments like surgeries, and more in an attempt to stop pain or disease as it occurs.

Find Wellness Alternatives That Work – For You.
I think we all know that conventional and modern medicine is reactionary and piecemeal, whereas good medicine should be proactive and encompass the whole of you and your body’s systems.

How We Support You On Your Wellness Journey:
Functional healing focuses more on supporting an already healthy lifestyle – or adapting routines to create a healthier way of living – instead of merely responding to illness and injury with treatments designed to only address symptoms.

At Well Theory, we believe that you are ultimately in charge of accomplishing your health goals. We just give you the tools and resources you need to get started towards a path to better overall wellness.

We believe that you should be empowered in your health journey.
